Checker-ed

I'm loving checks these days.  Checks plain and with borders of different colors.  Weave a fabric of checks and then turn to the sewing machine for shape-shifting and a flat piece of woven fabric becomes 3-dimensional.  This post is a gallery of work that has been on my loom over some of the last few months.

The particular vest has a name - Charlie.   A friend picked up a 'Charlie Harper' print at a rummage sale.  So lucky!  .... as I wove this fabric that picture was in my mind.

'Klein' blue and olive tones.

Woven in linen, silk and Tencel.

Kid Art at the Pumphouse in LaCrosse, WI  from all the kids who have art in school.  There are hundreds of these little canvases hanging in the galleries at the Pumphouse.  The body of work is called the Compassion Project.  Some are obvious, some you wish you could know what the kid was thinking.

So much inspiration in one place.
Impossible to put them all here - would if I could because all of them are the best.

Old School Geometry

There's a school in my neighborhood that is about to be torn down.  A crew is disassembling the place. It's been there since 1955 but now they say it needs fixing and that's too expensive.  The solution is to build new.  I know there are advantages to building new, better energy efficiency, state of the art classrooms and all that.   I'm hoping they put old-fashioned blackboards into the new school classrooms instead of those awful white boards and that they don't carpet the floors.   I am lamenting it's demise.  Artistry and craftsmanship is evident, apparent time and thought was put into styling this building.  New schools don't have that same vitality or soul. This post is a record of this place, dedicated to those who built it and inhabited the hallways over the years.

It's coming down so, of course, the kids got to decorate the walls and the floors.

Inset tile on the risers.

The geometry of straight lines and symmetry attracts and inspires me.
Prairie Reppweaves have geometric lines and symmetry --- like the tiled walls of the school.

Steppin' Out

Every year since '06 my daughter and I take this walk in September. If she doesn't have the day
off she takes a vacation day! We are serious, this is our day. This year we were 4000 strong - all
ages, women, men and children steppin' out in pink.
